BR28713007 – Research on geothermal resources in Southern Kazakhstan's sedimentary basins for direct use as a renewable energy source (RES)

Objective of the projectTo explore geothermal resources for the generation of thermal and electric energy to involve environmentally friendly renewable energy sources in the country's energy potential.

Relevance: Kazakhstan’s geothermal resources offer strong potential for clean heat and power but remain insufficiently explored. As the country aims to cut emissions and diversify its energy mix, this program will comprehensively assess geothermal resources for integration into the energy sector. It addresses key gaps such as limited data, reliance on fossil fuels, and the need to align with national and international sustainability goals. Using advanced analyses and field studies, the project will evaluate energy potential and develop a pilot geothermal heating program for regions including Almaty, Zharkent, Turkestan, Arys, and Khorgos.

Scientific supervisor: Candidate of technical sciences, Associate Professor, Yergali Auyelkhan

Expected and achieved results: The project will conduct comprehensive research on geothermal waters in the Zharkent, Almaty, and Arys sedimentary basins, including field studies and resource assessment. It will analyze international and local experience in using geothermal energy as a renewable source and develop a scientific basis for its integration into Kazakhstan’s energy sector. Detailed studies will examine geological, hydrogeological, and geochemical conditions, as well as the composition and origin of geothermal waters and their thermal potential. Based on the results, a pilot program will be designed to supply heat to regions including Almaty, Zharkent, Turkestan, Arys, and the Khorgos ICBC. The project will also support the training of highly qualified research specialists. Scientific outcomes will include publications in high-impact international and national journals and the preparation of a monograph or textbook. In addition, patents or other intellectual property registrations will be secured.
