AP23487129 – Improving production and quality of groundwater by developing innovative system borehole water treatment for water supply population of Kazakhstan

Objective of the projectIt consists in drinking and technical water supply to the population of technogenically loaded territories of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the expense of alternative sources of groundwater with technological support of borehole water purification.

Relevance: The relevance of the project is determined by the need to provide the population with high-quality drinking water, which is a priority not only for the Republic of Kazakhstan but also for the entire world. Under conditions of environmental challenges and increased technogenic pressure in Kazakhstan, the issue of water supply becomes especially critical. Many regions experience a lack of centralized water supply systems, which necessitates alternative solutions. One of the most effective approaches is the use of groundwater through the drilling of hydrogeological wells. However, existing technologies do not always ensure the required quality and sustainability of water supply. Therefore, the development of new technologies for groundwater extraction and purification is a relevant and highly demanded task.

Expected and achieved results: During the project, an analysis was conducted to identify the relationships between changes in physical fields and the formation of the binder and gravel composite of the polymer-gravel filter. A hydrogeological assessment of the state of the subsurface hydrosphere and water supply sources was carried out for the Beineu, Karakiya, Mangystau, and Tupkaragan regions. Existing designs of gravel filters, their manufacturing and transportation technologies were analyzed, and their main shortcomings were identified. It was found that current technologies do not ensure the reliable formation of high-quality gravel packing, which reduces well efficiency. The composition of the binder and polymer-gravel composite was substantiated, and the feasibility of using aqueous gelatin solutions as a binder was confirmed. Programs and methodologies for studying the rheological and physico-mechanical properties of the composite, including the influence of physical fields, were developed. Laboratory studies established the dependence of strength characteristics on temperature, humidity, and component concentration. Requirements for filter designs and mechanical water purification systems were substantiated, and their optimal parameters were determined. A new configuration of the filter column and a design methodology for the polymer-gravel filter were developed. A technology for manufacturing block-type filter elements using cryogenic processing was created. Experimental samples of polymer-gravel elements were produced and evaluated for quality. Based on the results, official acts and interim reports confirming the achieved outcomes were prepared and approved.
