AP19676664 – Deep Eutectic Solvents for Fuel Desulfurization

The aim of the project is to develop new extractive systems based on deep eutectic solvents for the purification of fuels from sulfur compounds by extraction from the liquid phase.

Relevance The resulting deep eutectic solvents are a new class of environmentally friendly compounds capable of efficiently extracting sulfur compounds from fuels.

Results obtained: Within the research project, scientific, technical, and patent information on deep eutectic solvents (DES) for fuel desulfurization was collected and analyzed. Various DES systems based on betaine, choline chloride, and quaternary ammonium salts were synthesized and characterized. Their extraction performance toward thiophene, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene was investigated, and the most effective compositions were identified. Optimal desulfurization parameters, including temperature, contact time, and DES-to-fuel ratio, were determined. It was shown that increasing sulfur concentration leads to a decrease in extraction efficiency. A techno-economic assessment was performed, confirming the promising potential of the developed DES systems.
