AP22685193 – The nature of groundwater radioactivity in the Almaty region

The purpose of the project is to identify the role of the water–rock system in the formation of the radionuclide composition of groundwater (springs used by the population for drinking and household purposes) in the Almaty region (Republic of Kazakhstan). The applied results of the project will be an assessment of their radiological hazard and quality for the purposes of drinking water supply to the population.

Relevance: The project is relevant in the light of the need to provide the population with safe drinking water. The study of the radionuclide composition of groundwater in the Almaty region makes it possible to identify potential health risks and develop measures to reduce them. This is especially important for regions with non-centralized water supply, where natural sources are the main source of water.

Scientific supervisor: Ph.D., Medeshova Nazgul

Expected and achieved results: • The results of the expedition rocks of the city of Almaty and the Almaty region (collections of natural waters and water-bearing rocks); • An electronic database with the results of chemical and analytical studies of groundwater and rocks; • Comprehensive isotopic and geochemical systematics of groundwater in the Almaty region; • Radiochemical typification of groundwater in the Almaty region; • Data on the quality and radiological hazard of groundwater in the Almaty region for drinking water supply;
